What is Plippa?

Plippa is a local-first player for digital audio you own. We designed Plippa to bring the joy of physical media and tactile controls to the modern music listening experience.

Right now we are prototyping two models of Plippa in preparation for a crowdfunding campaign. We'll tell you more about these models below. (Join our Mailing List to hear when we go live)

Plippas have a special feature: When you tap a physical object that carries an NFC tag, Plippa plays the music (or playlist, audiobook etc). Those objects are called Noubins, physical hyperlinks to audio.

It's called `Plippa` because that's the sound you hear when you tap a Noubin.

What is a Noubin?

A Noubin is an object with an NFC tag that contains a link. When tapped on a Plippa it plays the audio linked to that tag.

Anyone can make Noubins, they are an open standard based on cheap and widely available NFC stickers.

Artists can release music on Noubins as official physical media to accompany a digital release.

Users don't have to own a Plippa to play a Noubin. They can also be tapped on regular smartphones. Read the Noubin open standard to learn more

Plippa models

Plippa Model D

The everyday player โ€” for your coffee table, hifi shelf or bedside table. Tape deck style controls put fast forward and rewind at your fingertips.

On the retro side we have fond memories of recording and manipulating our own voices on childhood tape decks, which is why Plippa includes a built-in microphone.

  • Record and manipulate your voice
  • Annotate your music collection with voice notes
  • Attach recordings to Noubins
  • Physical record button
  • Privacy-safe hardwired microphone mute switch

On the modern side playing music today is only a hairs breadth away from making music. We went further so you use Plippa as an instrument:

  • BPM detection
  • Sync port for matching BPM to external synthesisers and drum machines
  • Two assignable encoders for controlling audio parameters in real time

  • Large jog wheel
  • Dedicated controls for tempo, looping and locating cue points
